“The first principle is that you must not fool yourself — and you are the easiest person to fool.” Richard Feynman

“Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” Vince Lombardi

Imagine how few people would speak more than one language if they were immediately and consistently evaluated solely on how fast they could speak it.

Imagine how few people would skillfully play the piano if they were immediately and consistently evaluated solely on how fast they could play.

Imagine how few people would acquire the skill to become verbatim reporters if they were immediately and consistently evaluated solely on how fast they could type a limited vocabulary?
We don’t have to imagine. We know, don’t we?

Imagine how poorly they would write and how diffident they would be concerning their chances of success.

Why is it that there are so many people that talk fast — without ever having speed drills and testing to facilitate that ability?

Why do court reporting programs continue to use methods that have consistently and repeatedly failed?

Confidence comes from reassurance that you are doing accurately what you are attempting to do. The most efficient way of acquiring that confidence is by reading the steno — immediately and repeatedly.

Rather than do things that might boost confidence, wouldn’t it be better to work on eliminating things that without a doubt are destroying it.

Writing faster is not accomplished by mindlessly practicing on the keyboard.
It is accomplished by eliminating hesitation.

Hesitation results from thinking about how a word is spelled, what outline to use, as well as finger placement, such as when stroking difficult-to-execute outlines.

But the thing that destroys confidence more profoundly than anything else is speed dictation.
Dictation should be recorded at a pace that is comfortable for one’s abilities for the subject matter at hand.

The most efficient way of building skill is to write from audio dictation files for 20 to 30 seconds, stop and read the steno; that is, steno should be read immediately in order to correct bad habits and form new positive ones.

Stenovations’ digitalCAT software and LightSpeed writers were created by owner/president Johnny Jay Jackson.

During his reporting career, Johnny passed the RPR, RMR, and RDR. He served for ten years as a federal official before starting his free-lance firm. Said firm was extraordinarily successful and funded the founding of Stenovations and the development of the digitalCAT software and LightSpeed keyboards.

You may have heard that Microsoft has started updating Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 computers to Windows 10 last night. We are proud to report that for most of our customers, you will need to take no additional steps to make sure that your Stenovations software works with Windows 10!

If you’re a LightSpeed user, you do not need to take any additional steps before switching to Windows 10.

If you’re a digitalCAT user, and you already have digitalCAT installed on your computer, you do not need to take any additional steps before switching to Windows 10.

The only case where you will need to do anything differently is if you are installing digitalCAT on a new Windows 10 computer. You will need to do two things: 1) request a new installer download from us, and 2) make sure that you have an Internet connection during the install.

We have to download some updates to your computer if you’ve never run digitalCAT before. The new version of digitalCAT that we are releasing today, 2015.07.004, can install these updates automatically as long as you’re connected to the internet.

If you need to install digitalCAT to a Windows 10 computer that cannot be connected to the Internet (such as at a court house), please give us a call. The process is a bit long and involved. If you have an IT professional responsible for your computer, it can help to have them available to talk to us. We can walk them through the process to install digitalCAT for you.

As always, if you need any assistance with digitalCAT or LightSpeed, or have any questions regarding Windows 10 or anything else, feel free to contact us.

sheer overall comfort in writing. I just LOVE writing

on it.Simply put, the LightSpeed is my favorite steno

machine of all time,” Mark Kislingbury – NCRA Speed Champion
